What Are LASIK and PRK?

Both LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) are safe and effective procedures that use an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct refractive errors. The main difference is in how the surface of the eye is prepared before laser treatment:

What to Expect: LASIK

1. Evaluation
   Your journey starts with a detailed eye exam and corneal mapping. We’ll determine if LASIK is appropriate and walk you through the process.
2. Procedure Day
   On the day of surgery, you’ll receive numbing eye drops and a mild sedative. A precise flap is created in the cornea, the laser reshapes the tissue underneath, and the flap is gently repositioned.
3. Recovery
   Most LASIK patients see dramatic improvement within 24 hours and return to work or regular activities within 1–2 days. Mild dryness or light sensitivity is normal and temporary.

What to Expect: PRK

1. Evaluation
   As with LASIK, you’ll undergo a complete eye exam and discussion of your goals. PRK is often recommended for patients with thinner corneas or active lifestyles.
2. Procedure Day
   The surface layer of the cornea (epithelium) is gently removed, and the laser is applied to reshape the tissue beneath. No flap is created.
3. Recovery
   Healing takes slightly longer than LASIK, with most patients achieving full visual clarity over the course of a few weeks. A protective contact lens is worn temporarily to aid healing.
